Salta & Jujuy

The Northwest is an attraction in itself, mainly framed by Salta and Jujuy. On this trip you can visit the Quebrada de Humahuaca in depth as well as the Calchaquí valleys and their beautiful colonial towns. You will be in contact with the natives of Argentina, enjoying the local atmosphere in its entirety.
Arrival at Salta airport and transfer to your accommodation. Rest of the day at leisure.
We start going through Valle de Lerma with its tobacco’s crops and towns with colonial architecture until Chicoana. Alter Chicoana we enter Escoipe’s Gorge, that has subtropical vegetation, and then we submerge into the sizzling and amazing Bishop’s Slope until we reach the highest point of our excursion: Piedra del Molino, at 3.348 meters above the sea.
A little further more, we have The National Park Los Cardones and then Cachi. Cachi, a peaceful town of the Valle Calchaquí, that welcomes us with its always white top of the Hill, named Nevado de Cachi. In Cachi, we visit its archeological museum and its old Church.
In the morning we will leave Cachi and will start our journey to Cafayate. We will cross Molinos and then the ”Quebrada de las Flechas”; there are several narrow passages, passing between 20 meter high rock walls.
Then, less than half an hour from Cafayate is San Carlos, the oldest town in the province of Salta and, for many, one of the most beautiful. Its main attraction is its historic center, where you can see its colonial architecture of old adobe houses and old wooden porches.
Then we will arrive in Cafayate, where you can discover amazing vineyards.
We will return to Salta visiting Valle of Lerma, with its tobacco’s crops and town with colonial architecture like Cerrilos, La Merced, El Carril, Coronel Moldes, until we get to the colorful and spectacular Concha´s Gorge, where the action of the wind and water on the rocks have drawn impressive formations, such as the Devil’s Throat, the Amphitheatre, the Frog.
After breakfast we take route 34 passing by the Valle de Siancas, going through the General Güemes town and crops of sugarcane, beans, tobacco, etc until we reach the province of Jujuy.
After that, we go into Humahuaca´s Gorge, declared Humanity Heritage by the UNESCO, visiting its different town like Tumbaya, Purmamarca and its spectacular Seven Colors Hill and craftsmanship, Posta de Hornillos, further on our way, we will pass through Maimará and its Painter’s Pad, Tilcara and its Pucara.
Further up, Huacalera, Uquía and later we cross by the Capricorn Tropic, we get to Humahuaca.
Then return to Huacalera to stay there.
Leave in the morning to ascend the impressive Lipan slope and get to 4,000 meters above sea level and then visit the Salinas Grandes, the main salt flat of Argentina.
These salt flats provide a unique visual spectacle in the rainy seasons as they are covered by 30 cm. of water producing a turquoise panorama with a view of the snowy Chañi behind them and the route that crosses through them. They are located between the limits of the northern provinces of Jujuy and Salta, they are one of the largest salt flats in the country. From this immense salt plain, which presents a beautiful and characteristic landscape of the Puna of Jujuy, it is extracted in a traditional way.
The town of Iruya is located on the edge of the hills, which offers impressive landscapes.
Although the town of Iruya is located in the province of Salta, its access is from Jujuy. Iruya is a small town nestled in the mountains between the Quebrada de Humahuaca to the west and the Yungas to the east. Iruya is located at a height of 2,780 meters above sea level. and it looks like a town hanging from the mountains on a balcony over the Iruya River. It has an approximate population of 1,500 inhabitants.
Today we will return to Salta at the end of the day.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport in Salta for your return flight.
