Top Hiking Trails in El Chaltén: From Easy Walks to Epic Treks

When we talk about trekking, we inevitably have to talk about El Chaltén. Known as Argentina’s Trekking Capital, it was founded in 1985, making it the youngest town in the country.

Its location at the foot of the mighty Mount Fitz Roy, in Santa Cruz province, makes it ideal for anyone looking for adventure, unique experiences, fresh air, and a chance to step outside their comfort zone.

This wonderful Patagonian village offers trails for everyone. It’s perfect if you’re just getting into trekking, with options ranging from easy walks to moderate hikes and more challenging routes. El Chaltén’s natural landscapes are world-renowned for their beauty and accessibility—most trails don’t require any previous mountain experience.

Condores and Águilas Viewpoints

Duration: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 6.9 km

These are among the easiest trails in El Chaltén, perfect for those seeking a short and relaxed walk to get a feel for the area’s geography.

The route starts in the village, crosses the Fitz Roy River bridge, and continues to the trailhead at the National Park Visitor Center. From there, it takes about an hour to reach the Condores Viewpoint. Opened in 2004, the trail is well-marked with informative signs along the way.

As its name suggests, the viewpoint is strategically located for spotting condors and taking in El Chaltén’s stunning landscapes. From here, an additional 30-minute gentle walk leads to the Águilas Viewpoint, where the vast Lake Viedma comes into view. The panorama extends over the Patagonian steppe and the lake itself.

Laguna Capri

Duration: 4–6 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 12 km

This hike is ideal for a gentle introduction to the unparalleled beauty of Los Glaciares National Park.

The trail climbs gradually along the picturesque Río de las Vueltas Valley. After a moderate walk through native forest, the path opens up to the shores of Laguna Capri—a crystal-clear lake framed by rugged mountain scenery.

Laguna Torre

Duration: 7–8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 20 km

One of El Chaltén’s classic hikes. The trail follows the Fitz Roy River Valley, and after just 15 minutes you’ll reach the first viewpoint with sights of Cerro Solo, the Adela Range, Cerro Torre, Mount Fitz Roy, and Margarita Waterfall.

Halfway through, the Cerro Torre Viewpoint offers a breathtaking look at the valley and moraines, remnants of past glaciations. From here, you can either return or continue to Laguna Torre.

Those who go on will pass the De Agostini base camp, where overnight stays are possible to witness one of Patagonia’s most magical sunrises. Beyond the camp, the trail heads to the frontal moraine—here you can either descend to the lake or continue another 2 km to the Maestri Viewpoint. Take time to rest by the lagoon, absorb the stillness, and then return along the same path.

Huemules Reserve Trekking

Duration: 4–9 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 20 km
Recommendation: Guided hike

Located about 20 km from El Chaltén, Estancia Los Huemules is a private nature reserve dedicated to conservation, home to some of the region’s most beautiful forests.

Within the reserve you’ll find a network of trails ranging from easy one-hour walks to more demanding three-hour climbs. For peaceful hikes with great views, trails to Laguna Azul and the Río Eléctrico Valley are excellent choices. For those seeking a challenge, the ascent to Loma del Diablo is highly rewarding.

Laguna de los Tres

Duration: 9–10 hours
Difficulty: Hard
Distance: 22 km
Recommendation: Guided hike

This is El Chaltén’s most iconic trail. Starting at Río Eléctrico, you’ll cross valleys and native forests until reaching the Piedras Blancas Glacier viewpoint. From there, the path continues through Poincenot Camp before tackling the steepest and most demanding section: a rocky climb that leads to Laguna de los Tres.

The effort is well worth it—the views of Mount Fitz Roy are unmatched. After a well-deserved rest, the descent follows a different trail, passing Laguna Capri before returning to town.

Fitz Roy Valley

Duration: 6–7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 17 km
Recommendation: Guided hike

Perfect for those not ready for the full ascent to Laguna de los Tres but still wanting to get close to Mount Fitz Roy.

The trail starts at the Río Eléctrico bridge, following a scenic valley to the Piedras Blancas Glacier viewpoint. It continues through Poincenot, offering one of the most spectacular panoramas of the entire mountain range.

The return follows a different path along the river, finishing at Laguna Capri for a final breathtaking view of Fitz Roy before heading back to town.

Cerro Madsen Express

Duration: approx. 14 hours
Difficulty: Challenging
Distance: 28 km
Recommendation: Guided hike

This demanding adventure begins in El Chaltén and leads to the Río Blanco Valley, from where the ascent to Laguna de los Tres begins. From the lagoon, a steep trail climbs toward Cerro Madsen.

The terrain is varied—rocky sections and snow patches require proper gear and safety equipment. After about 3 hours of steady effort, you’ll reach the summit. The final meters involve a short, easy rock scramble, but the reward at the top is truly unforgettable.

Exploring the trails of El Chaltén means immersing yourself in the very essence of Patagonia. Whether on a short walk or a demanding trek, each trail invites you to connect with nature in a unique way.
