6 Days / 5 Nights
Salta & Jujuy
USD 699
The Northwest is an attraction in itself, mainly framed by Salta and Jujuy. On this trip you can visit the Quebrada de Humahuaca in depth as well as the Calchaquí valleys and their beautiful colonial towns. You will be in contact with the natives of Argentina, enjoying the local atmosphere in its entirety.
Arrival at Salta airport and transfer to your accommodation.
From south to north, the Quebrada de Humahuaca begins in Volcán, where the mountains abruptly abandon their greenery and give way to ochre and brown mountain ranges. Following the course of the Río Grande, we arrive at the town of Tumbaya, home to its beautiful church built in 1796. Taking a detour along National Route No. 52, we enter Purmamarca, a town of legends and singers, which has a church dedicated to Saint Rose of Lima dating back to 1648.
The town of Purmamarca was built at the foot of the internationally renowned “Hill of Seven Colors.” The journey continues through Tilcara. Further north, after passing through Huacalera and the Tropic of Capricorn, we reach Uquía, whose church holds one of the most important collections of the famous “Arquebusier Angels,” emblematic examples of Cusco painting.
The city of Humahuaca, the very heart of the Quebrada, awaits visitors with an abundance of natural, historical, and cultural attractions.
We continue towards the town of Tilcara where we visit the Pucará (ancient ruins), the Archaeological Museum, and Huacalera, then we cross the Capricorn Tropic, from where the colors of La Pollera del Coya Hill can be seen and really good pictures taken because of the daylight. We visit Uquía and its church, where the paintings of the Arcabuceros Angels (important vestige in the zone of the Cuzqueña School) are kept.
Arrival to Humahuaca will be at noon; this town has an important Church and the Independence Monument (the Indian) of the sculptor Soto Avendaño. After lunch we´ll observe, from the route, La Paleta del Pintor (Paintor’sPalette) framing the town of Maimara. We continue to San Salvador de Jujuy where the Flag Hall and the Cathedral, characterized by its pulpit carved in wood and gold and the statues of Lola Mora are visited.
Finally, we return to Salta through National Route N° 9 of abundant subtropical vegetation. The last stretch is: El Abra of Santa Laura, observing La Cienaga (The Swamp) dam, Las Maderas and Campo Alegre and returning to Salta through Vaqueros.
Continuing on, we reach Alemania, the gateway to the Valles Calchaquíes, where colors multiply in countless shades along the route of this stunning ravine.
Alongside the road, which follows the Las Conchas River, wind erosion has sculpted a series of astonishing natural formations, including La Garganta del Diablo (The Devil’s Throat), El Anfiteatro (The Amphitheater)—a gigantic fissure in the mountain that forms a spectacular rock stage—Los Castillos (The Castles), and other remarkable shapes that depend on one’s imagination and the shifting sunlight that illuminates the mountains of this magical ravine.
Continuing on, we arrive at the junction of the Santa María and Calchaquí Valleys with the Quebrada de Las Conchas, offering views of the Tres Cruces and Morales hills. Within this stunning mountain landscape, at the foot of Cerro San Isidro, flanked by rivers and surrounded by vineyards that give birth to its famous wines—including the renowned Torrontés—stands Cafayate.
